Ophthalmology department

At SNU VMTH, we provide specialized ophthalmology consultation and operation for specific eye diseases. We have detailed equipments for the accurate diagnosis of eye diseases, and provide procedures and treatments for various eye diseases caused by congenital or acquired conditions.
If necessary, we will seek out the most suitable treatment option for patients through cooperation with other departments.
We are striving to improve diagnostic and surgical techniques for ophthalmic diseases through continuous research.

Ophthalmology treatments

Cataract

A cataract is a disease in which the lens that lets through and refracts light has white turbidity due to various causes. If the entire eye lens turns white, the light can no longer pass through and vision is lost.
For these cataracts, considering the best option for the inflicted animal, we can restore the patient‘s vision through surgical correction and insertion of an artificial intraocular lens.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that causes severe pain and loss of vision because the pressure in the eye rises unregulated. Glaucoma can be caused by congenital or acquired conditions, and it is a disease that requires timely treatment.
At SNU VMTH, we strive to restore the patient‘s vision and alleviate their pain by using precise equipments for the diagnosis of glaucoma and providing the appropriate treatments and surgical procedures for each patient.

Cornea

The cornea is located at the outermost part of the eye and serves as a transparent window. It can be prone to corneal ulcers or keratitis due to various causes. At our hospital, the causes of keratitis are precisely diagnosed, then the appropriate correction for the causes and treatments for corneal opacity will be provided.
Various conjunctival flap and eyelid suture techniques are used for the appropriate treatment of corneal ulcers. Corneal edema is treated by corneal correction through corneal blood vessels when the edema is due to corneal endothelial degeneration.

Retina

Retina is the part of the eye that contains the most important visual cells that shape our vision. The retina may be damaged by various causes, and may also lead to vision loss. At SNU VMTH ophthalmology department, we use various equipments to diagnose retinal diseases, and our team strives to restore the patient‘s vision through proper treatments.
In particular, we could provide retinopexy surgery for patients whose vision has been lost due to retinal detachment.

Eyelid and other diseases

In the case of eyelid diseases such as eyelid tumors or eyelid dysplasia, eyelid plastic surgery is performed not only to take care of the cause of disease but also for the patient‘s quality of life. Tear staining syndrome where the eye becomes festered with excessive tears and surronding hair turns red, treatment is provided through medial canthoplasty. Eyelashes will be removed to lessen the irritation to the eye and alleviate the excessive tear flow.
Additionally, we perform surgical correction for emergencies such as protrusion of the eyeball (proptosis) and corneal perforation caused by accidents.

Dentistry department: As the life expectancy of companion animals is increasing and they consume more soft and nutritious food, tooth care of companion animals is becoming more important. The purpose of dental treatment of companion animals is to resolve the pain and discomfort caused by oral diseases and improve the quality of life. Our service provides thorough dental examination (including dental radiographs) and appropriate treatments for each patient. Furthermore, when necessary, we cooperate with other departments to seek the optimal treatment. We persistently focus on research to improve dental treatment.

Due to the nature of dentistry services, procedures are performed under general anesthesia. This not only provides accuracy of treatments but ensures the health and safety of the patient. Tight, real time monitoring dedicated to each patient is performed by SNU-VMTH Anesthesia and Analgesia Department.

Periodontics

Periodontitis refers to inflammatory changes caused by bacterial complexes such as plaque and tartar adjacent to the periodontal ligaments, alveolar bone, and gingiva, which are structures around the teeth that support the root. As periodontitis progresses, gingival recession may occur along with increased tooth mobility, and sometimes tooth extraction is required due to severe pain. To treat periodontitis, various types of gingival flap surgery and periodontal tissue regeneration that suits each patient's condition are performed.

Conservative dentistry

When the nerves and blood vessels in the center of the tooth are exposed due to tooth damage, bacterial infection occurs in the oral cavity, causing inflammation and pain. Endodontic therapy is a treatment method that removes infected/necrotic tissue, preserves the teeth by filling them with clean materials, and prevents further disease progression before the exacerbation of infection and inflammation.

Restorative treatment is performed to restore defective areas of teeth after endodontic therapy or to maintain masticatory function or normal tooth structure. In SNU VMTH, we use endodontic and restorative materials that suit the patient's dental condition for conservation treatment.

Dogs and cats use teeth as humans use hands. If stomatitis or periodontitis progresses or inflammation of root apex causes facial fistula, tooth extraction may be required to the eliminate the cause of pain.

Orthodontics

Unlike humans, orthodontic treatment is performed only when malposition of the teeth causes pain or difficulty chewing. The applicability of orthodontic treatment is limited because patient's age, compliance, and periodontal condition must be taken into consideration.

Feline dentistry

Oral diseases of cats that occur frequently are different from those of dogs. Since irritation caused by dental plaque is the main problem in many cases, regular dental treatment is important. SNU VMTH provides specialized treatment for dental diseases in cats.
