Information on different departments at SNU VMTH and introduction for the medical staff will be provided here.

Theriogenology
After successfully creating the world‘s first cloned dog Snuppy back in 2005, the theriogenology department at SNU VMTH has also succeeded in producing Ruppy, the world’s first transgenic cloned dog, as well as Tet-on, another transgenic cloned dog whose gene expression can be controlled. We are also conducting various bioengineering research through Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer technique. In addition, we carry out research on xenotransplantation and cell therapy using transgenic cloned pigs, and on in vitro culture of oocytes and in vitro fertilization to preserve valuable genes.
Reproductive
disorders
At SNU VMTH, we treat reproductive organ diseases in accordance with the severity of the conditions in dogs and cats.

Treatment for Female dogs and cats

  • In intact(non-spayed) female dogs and cats, ‘Pyometra‘ is one of typical emergency diseases that requires proper treatment within a few days of occurrence. This occurs immediately following the end of the estrus period. Failure to take timely measures for surgery may lead to acute kidney failure, toxicosis, and even sepsis. Therefore, our theriogenology department is providing treatment to the following female reproductive disorders.
  • 1) Timely treatment and surgery for female reproductive system emergency disorders
  • 2) Treatment for abnormal vulvar discharges, acute and chronic vaginitis, abnormal estrus symptoms (estrus sign after neutering), acute/chronic
mastitis, ovarian tumors (follicular cysts, luteal cysts, and etc.)
  • 3) Neutralization of aged dogs/cats or those who have conditions unfavourable for anesthesia (heart diseases, endocrine diseases)
  • 4) Re-operation of ovarian remnant syndrome(ORS)
  • 5) Pyometra / Neutralization re-operations

Treatment for Male dogs and cats

  • Non-castrated male dogs
  • 1) Treatment for orchititis, cryptochidism, Testicular tumor(seminoma, sertoli cell tumor, and etc.), priapism(persistant penile erection), prostatic hyperplasia
  • 2) Neutralization of aged dogs/cats or those who have conditions unfavourable for anesthesia (heart diseases, endocrine diseases)
Breeding and
its management
We determine the prime mating time of the female dogs and cats and use frozen or fresh sperm to select the appropriate artificial fertilization method aimed at improving the efficiency of the pregnancy. Unlike natural copulation, artificial insemination is a procedure in which we are artificially injecting semen into female reproductive organs for conception.
Vaginal endoscopy, blood tests, radiology will be conducted to check if the female dog is at healthy state to maintain pregnancy and delivery, and hormone tests will be conducted over a period of several days to determine the best timing for the insemination.
The semen of the male subject is analyzed by an automatic sperm analyzer(CASA) to determine whether it is suitable for artificial insemination.

Breeding management

  • 1) Test for selection of proper time of copulation (serum progesterone test, vaginal smear, etc.)
  • 2) Precise sperm motility test using CASA (Computer-Assisted Sperm Analysis)
  • 3) Parental confirmation analysis using microsatellite marker as a traditional pedigree control method

Artificial insemination

  • 1) When artificial insemination using sperm injection into the female reproductive system produces a reproductive embryo and this embryo is transplanted into a surrogate mother, a cloned animals will be created.
Treatment for dystocia,
artificial labor,
and consulting for
substitute milk for
newborn dogs/cats

What is dystocia?

  • Dogs and cats are basically muciparous animals. If they are pregnant with less than 2 fetuses, have underlying diseases, or breed predisposition(e.g. brachycephalic species, Cocker spaniel), treatment for dystocia may be required in various situations.

What is consulting for substitute milk for newborn animals?

  • SNU VMTH theriogenology department provides consulting and consultation for providing nutrition to newborn animals through substitute milk not just in cases of dystocia therapy through artificial labor or drug treatment, but also for young animals under three months of age whose mother had passed away.
