Information on different departments at SNU VMTH and introduction for the medical staff will be provided here.

Anesthesia &
Pain Medicine
The SNU VMTH department of anesthesia and pain medicine is in charge of all practice of anesthesia at VMTH including the pain management peri-operative care. Injection anesthesia are used for simple procedures, and inhalation anesthesia are for surgery.
The department is equipped with anaesthetic machines monitoring systems that can measure heart rate, respiration rate, body temperature, arterial pressure, carbon dioxide concentration, and the concentration of inhalant anesthetics to ensure the safety of patients under anaesthesia.
Anesthesiology
Services
The services offered by the anesthesiology department are as follows.

Sedation

The department of anesthesia and pain medicine offers sedation necessary to reduce patient and veterinarian stress and for safer and more efficient treatment.

Anesthesia in the scrub room

Before the induction of anesthesia, sedation and analgesia reduce patient stress and risk of anesthesia.
To prevent contamination of the aseptic operating room and infection of the patient during surgery, anesthesia is inducted in the surgical 'preparation room'
When the patient becomes ready for surgery, the patient will be moved to the operation room.

Anesthesia for endoscopic procedure

When food or swallowed substances are lodged in the neck, esophagus, or stomach, an endoscope is used to remove it. Unlike humans, animals cannot tolerate these procedures without general anesthesia due to their instinctive reactions and their limited patience. They are therefore subjected to general anesthesia before they are examined and removal operation is performed.

Anesthesia for ophthalmic surgery

In ophthalmic diseases, including surgical treatment, general anesthesia is also given even for simple treatment.
In particular, the eyes are very sensitive parts, so general anesthesia is essential for safe treatment.

Anesthesia for general surgery

Except for simple surgical treatments using local anesthesia, most operations in general surgery are conducted with general anesthesia. In particular, surgical procedures such as intraperitoneal surgery or removal of mammary tumors are usually performed under general anesthesia. Post-operative pain management is also an important treatment because it greatly affects post-operative recovery.

Anesthesia for Orthopedic Surgery

Most bone-related surgeries, such as the treatment of fractures or the treatment of patellar dislocation are performed under general anesthesia. Post-operative pain management is also an important treatment because it greatly affects post-operative recovery.

Anesthesia for CT and MRI scans

CT and MRI are performed for more detailed imaging than X-ray.
As animals do not stay still for scanning, general anesthesia is required.

Anesthesia during surgery on large animals

Surgery of large animals such as cattle and horses will be anesthetized according to the characteristics of each animal. Generally, cows are sedated with sedatives and operated under local anesthesia while horses are given general anesthesia after sedated.
In case of cows, SNU VMTH makes full use of the new epidural anesthesia method developed by Professor Lee In-hyung of the Department of Anesthesiology to carry out the surgical procedures without inflicting any pain to the animal.
